Brock Elementary School – Junior Grades Curriculum

4–6 Program: Building Strong Minds and Stronger Character
At Brock Elementary School, our Grades 4 to 6 program provides a rich, engaging educational experience that merges the Ontario Ministry of Education’s curriculum with Islamic teachings and values. Students at this stage are encouraged to think critically, engage in inquiry-based learning, and grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually.

Language Arts (English Language)

Following the Ontario Language Curriculum:

Reading & Media Literacy

Students read increasingly complex texts (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) and develop skills to analyze tone, perspective, and purpose. They also learn to interpret media messages critically.

Writing

Focus on organizing ideas clearly, writing for various purposes (narrative, persuasive, report), and mastering grammar, spelling, and revision skills for effective communication.

Oral Communication

Build confidence and clarity through consistent public speaking and listening practice. Actively engage in group discussions to improve interpersonal communication and enhance collaborative thinking skills.

Critical Thinking

Focus on developing strong arguments and evidence-based reasoning across subjects, enhancing critical thinking and analytical skills for logical conclusions in various fields.

Mathematics

Aligned with the 2020 Revised Ontario Math Curriculum:

Number Sense & Numeration

Our curriculum covers fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and multi-digit operations, building strong problem-solving and numerical skills for students’ mathematical foundation.

Algebra

In algebra, students are introduced to variables, expressions, patterns, and equations, laying the groundwork for logical thinking and abstract problem-solving.

Data Literacy

In data literacy, students explore graphs, surveys, averages, and probability, developing the skills to interpret and analyze real-world information effectively.

Geometry

In geometry, students learn about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, symmetry, and transformations, enhancing their spatial reasoning and visual understanding.

Measurement

In measurement, students work with units of time, perimeter, area, volume, and angles, while also learning to convert between metric units to solve practical problems.

Coding

In coding, students develop both block-based and text-based programming skills using tools like Scratch and micro:bit, fostering creativity, logic, and computational thinking.

Financial Literacy

In financial literacy, students learn to make responsible money decisions through budgeting, saving, and understanding the difference between needs and wants.

Science & Technology

Each grade follows the Ontario Science & Technology curriculum, with real-world application and inquiry-based exploration:

Grade 4 Topics

Habitats and communities, pulleys and gears, light and sound, and rocks and minerals are key topics exploring natural systems and physical principles.

Grade 5 Topics

Human organ systems, forces acting on structures, properties and changes in matter, and conservation of energy and resources are key scientific concepts exploring biology and physics.

Grade 6 Topics

Biodiversity, flight, electricity, and space are explored through hands-on labs, digital simulations, and STEM challenges, fostering interactive learning and scientific discovery.

Social Studies

Grades 4–6 include geography, civics, and Canadian heritage:

Grade 4

Early societies and the political and physical regions of Canada are studied to understand historical developments, geography, and the cultural foundations of the nation.

Grade 5

Indigenous peoples and European explorers, along with government and citizenship, are explored to understand Canada’s history, cultural interactions, and political structures.

Grade 6

Global communities, Canadian participation, democratic rights, and responsibilities are examined, integrating Islamic perspectives on justice, equity, and the stewardship of the Earth in the lessons.

The Arts

Based on the Ontario Arts Curriculum, covering:

Visual Arts

Students explore drawing, painting, and sculpture through creative expression and Islamic themes, such as geometric art, blending artistic skills with cultural appreciation.

Drama

Storytelling and improvisation develop creativity, expression, and communication skills through spontaneous performance and narrative techniques.

Health & Physical Education

Physical fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork through daily activities:

Topics include

Personal safety, mental health awareness, and nutrition are emphasized, teaching students to care for their bodies as an amanah (trust) from Allah ﷻ.

French as a Second Language

Students develop fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening through an engaging curriculum, while exploring French culture and expressions in alignment with Islamic values.

Islamic Studies, Qur'an & Arabic

A dedicated portion of the school day focuses on nurturing students’ Islamic identity and understanding:

Islamic Studies

Students study Seerah (life of the Prophet ﷺ), Aqeedah (beliefs), Fiqh (practices), and Islamic History to deepen their understanding of faith and tradition.

Character Education (Akhlaq)

Emphasis is placed on truthfulness, patience, humility, gratitude, and other core Islamic virtues to foster strong moral character and spiritual growth.

Qur’an

Students engage in daily memorization (Hifdh), proper recitation with Tajweed, and understanding of selected Surahs to strengthen their connection with the Qur’an.

Quranic Arabic

Instruction emphasizes reading, speaking, and listening skills, enabling students to understand, interpret, and connect with the language of the Holy Qur’an.

Holistic & Values-Based Learning

Spiritual Development: Time for reflection, daily salah, hadith of the week, and morning halaqah.

Leadership & Responsibility

Students engage in school councils, buddy programs, and student-led assemblies, building leadership, collaboration, and a sense of responsibility within the school community.

Parental Engagement

Regular communication, parent-teacher conferences, and community events help keep families informed, engaged, and connected to the school community.

Technology Integration

Chromebooks and classroom digital tools are used safely and purposefully to enhance learning and support student engagement with technology.

Preparing for the Future

By the end of Grade 6, students are:

Our students are academically prepared for middle school and beyond, grounded in strong Islamic morals and etiquette. They are confident in their identity as Canadian Muslim students, embracing their faith with pride. Additionally, they are equipped with essential 21st-century learning skills, including collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, enabling them to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
